Minerals Core Strategy

In September 2007 the minerals industry were invited to submit their proposals for strategic sites and since then additional site options have been submitted as well as amendments made to previously submitted site options. Now the County Council has the task of testing the site options as part of preparing a preferred strategy for minerals.

Each site will have to be judged on whether it meets the aims of the national and regional policies, whether they are sustainable and environmentally acceptable, and whether they can be commenced within a 15 year time frame.

Of the 49 proposed sites received so far, 32 are for sand and gravel, of which 17 are extensions to existing sites. There are 11 proposals for clay extraction, six of which are extensions. The other proposed sites include proposals for the extraction of coal by opencast methods (3), silica sandstone (2) and gypsum/anhydrite (1).

Details of the sites submitted can be downloaded by clicking the site names below. The document for each site includes a location plan and a short profile listing basic details of the proposed mineral development; characteristics of the local environment and relevant reclamation issues. To help in understanding the site profile a glossary is provided together with references to the sources of information used in compiling the profile.

Please note that the purpose of the profiles is to provide details on the circumstances of each site and does not represent all the factors that will be used for assessment of the sites and the selection of preferred options. Each profile is based on information available at the time writing and there will be a need for additional evidence to be gathered as sites are assessed.
