What is a Right of Way?

Anyone can use a public right of way to legally cross someone else's land. Public rights of way in Staffordshire are documented on our 'Definitive Map|||||', and we have a duty to keep them open and available for use at all times.

There are three types of public path:

  • Public Footpath: these are for walkers only.
  • Public Bridleway: you may walk or ride a horse or bicycle on a Bridleway. Cyclists must give way to walkers and riders.
  • Public Byway Open to All Traffic (or BOAT): you may walk, ride a horse, bicycle or drive a vehicle on a BOAT.
