Deep Hayes Walks

These three walks are based from Deep Hayes Country Park, situated approximately two miles from Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands. They give an opportunity to see some of the area's industrial heritage and enjoy a variety of attractive landscapes unique to Staffordshire.

The Red Walk, at four and a quarter miles in length, will take approximately two and a half hours to complete. The route is a delightful walk through woodlands and alongside the Leek Arm of the Caldon Canal. This is the easiest of the three walks to follow.

The Blue Walk, at four miles in length, will take approximately two hours to complete. There are steep gradients and stout footwear is recommended. The walk shares the route of the Staffordshire Way long distance footpath along the Caldon Canal, before looping round to return through the heart of the Country Park.

This walk demonstrates the best of Staffordshire's varied rural landscape, though in places is somewhat arduous, but well worth the effort. There is a short cut that shortens the route to three miles. The walk takes you to Stanley Pool, a feeder dam originally built in 1783 to feed the nearby Caldon Canal. Onwards from the Pool, there are spectacular views across the whole of the County and beyond; westwards over the Cheshire Plain and Shropshire to the Welsh Hills, the rugged gritstone cliffs of the Roaches in the Peak District National Park to the north-east, and the Trent Valley to the south.
