The Built Environment

The Historic Environment Team provides both technical advice and advice within the appropriate legislative framework to County Council Officers regarding developments which may impact on the historic environment and property owned by Staffordshire County Council.

Areas of advice would cover the following:
  • Listed Buildings
  • Conservation Areas
  • Historic Parks and Gardens
  • Scheduled Ancient Monuments

Policy and Technical Guidance:

Advice is provided directly or through guidance notes such as the "Conservation within the Highways: Structures of Historic Importance" document.

Monitoring the Historic environment:

An annual "buildings at risk survey" is carried out of all listed buildings owned or maintained by the Development Services Directorate (DSD). The survey monitors the general condition of the buildings by scoring them on a scale of 1 to 6 and has been adopted as a performance indicator by DSD.

Community and interest group projects:

Advice is offered to local community and special interest groups regarding projects which help to conserve the historic environment. One example is the successful establishment of the Ilam Cross Trust, which was formed to manage the conservation of the Ilam Cross an important stone monument within Staffordshire Moorlands.

Regeneration within the historic environment:

Heritage led regeneration is becoming increasingly important as a method of managing sustainable redevelopment within areas requiring economic and housing renewal. By identifying the value of positive characteristics of the built elements within an affected area it is possible to guide a design for a regeneration project which respects the past and provides appropriate opportunities for new development. The Historic Environment team is able to contribute to this process where appropriate.
