Stafford to Newport Greenway

The first part of this former railway line was opened as a Greenway in 1991. The Greenway follows the route of the former Stafford to Newport Railway Line which was built in 1849 and run for 115 years. The Greenway passes through the countryside and farmland east of Stafford Town, passing close to features of interest including Stafford Castle and Berry Ring, which can be reached by public footpaths connecting to the Greenway. The route extends to approximately 14 kilometres.

Passing through open country, the Greenway is a valuable habitat for wildlife. Birds such as Fieldfares, Redwings, Mistlethrushes and Finches feed on the adjacent fields and hedgerows.

The Greenway now also forms part of the route of the County Council's Way for the Millenium, a long distance route running east-west across the County.

Horse Riding Permits are available, enabling equine access to the route.
