The Duke of Edinburghs Award
DofE is a programme of activities for young people to do in their spare time.
DofE is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25, regardless of gender, background or ability. It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time.
What does The Duke of Edinburgh's Award involve?
Young people design their own programme, geared to their own choices, personal circumstances and local provision. DofE offers a progressive pathway, with each level of the award programme demanding more time and an increasing level of commitment and responsibility from the young person.
There are three levels to the award; Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Bronze: for those aged 14 and over
Silver: for those aged 15 and over
Gold: for those aged 16 and over
At each level, there are four sections involved and one additional section for the Gold Award.
Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or community.
Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance, or fitness activities.
Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.
At Gold level, participants must do an additional fifth Residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity.
Why take the Challenge?
-
A career - DofE looks pretty fine on your C.V.
-
To make friends - You can never have too many! You're practically guaranteed to make new friends of all ages.
-
The adventure - It's often the expedition section of DofE that people enjoy most. Whether you're hitting the highlands on foot or taking a major waterway on by canoe - there's always going to be a sense of adventure involved.
-
To get an award - It is seen by educational institutions, employers and governments all over the world as a pretty impressive achievement. If you complete Gold, you will rub shoulders with Royalty itself - presentations take place in the Royal Palaces!
-
New skills and interests - There are DofE programmes in place for over 200 activities and if you find your chosen interest isn't one of them, a new Programme can be created for you and your passion!
-
Self confidence - DofE will show you how you can take on seemingly daunting challenges!
-
Fitness - DofE doesn't have to be hugely active; no one is out to turn you into an Olympic athlete (though some participants have actually become Olympic and Commonwealth athletes, like Dame Kelly Holmes!) but there will be some physical activity involved which can actually be quite good fun and as they keep telling us, is apparently good for you.
