Autism and Sensory Support

The Specialist Support Service consists of 5 teams:

  • Hearing Impairment Team
  • Visual Impairment Team
  • ASSIST (Post 16) Team
  • Autism Outreach Team
  • Business Support Team

The service was established with the aim of ensuring that children and young people with Sensory Impairment and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are given every opportunity to benefit from an inclusive educational experience. Children will, whenever possible, attend their local mainstream Early Years provision and Primary/Secondary schools with their siblings and friends.  A small number of children with additional difficulties may attend local special schools.

The service consists of a range of specialist staff, including teachers, communication support workers and business support staff who between them provide a wide range of support for pupils, students and their families who work with the families, teachers, tutors and other professionals involved with children and young people with a sensory impairment and/or ASD. We may work with such people from the time of diagnosis or identification.

Support is available for students in further and higher education establishments in Staffordshire.  The type and amount of support is assessed on individual need and is constantly monitored.  In the case of children with a sensory impairment, referral to the service is usually from health professionals and is often at a very young age following diagnosis.  For those pupils either diagnosed or identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, referrals come directly from the schools and Early years Settings.
