Secondary Schools and High Schools 

How to apply

When your child moves into year 6 at primary school or year 8 at middle school you will need to start thinking about which secondary or high school you would like your child to move on to. Parents will need to make their applications between the start of the autumn term and 31st October 2013.   

  • Applications can be made from the middle of September 2013 either online or by completing an application form.  
  • Applications can also be made by telephoning the School Admissions and Transport Service on 01785 278593   

Secondary Information for Parents| booklet is available for guidance and an upsdated version will be available from the autumn term 2013. This can be requested from the School Admissions Team by telephoning 01785 278593.

When making your application please remember to provide any additional information that may be requested. This may particularly apply to foundation, trust and voluntary aided schools who may require evidence of baptism and completion of a supplementary form. Schools which require pupils to take an entrance exam will also require a separate registration form to be completed. Please refer to the school directly to obtain this form and to find out the closing date to submit this form. 

 

Primary Schools, First Schools and Middle Schools

How to apply

If your child was born between the 01/09/2009 and 31/08/2010 you will be able to apply for a place in a reception class from 01st November 2013. If your child is a year 4 pupil at a first school you will also be able to apply for a middle school place for your child from this date. The closing date for both types of applications is 15th January 2014

An updated Primary Information for Parents booklet  | will be available from this date for guidance and also a First to Middle School Information for Parents booklet |. These can be requested from the School Admissions Team by telephoning 01785 278593

Admission to Academies, Voluntary Aided, Foundation and Trust Schools. 

The governing body is responsible for the admissions criteria that will be used in deciding which pupils to admit should the school be oversubscribed. A summary of the admissions criteria adopted by these schools can be found in the relevant Information for Parents booklets or you can contact the school for a full copy of their admissions criteria.

Admissions Criteria to Community schools and Voluntary controlled schools for Secondary, High and Middle Schools 

Please refer to the Determined Admission Arrangements for 2014/2015| (p.10)

  • Children in care or previously in care
  • Exceptional medical/social reasons
  • Pupils with siblings in attendance at the school 
  • Pupils living within the catchment area of the school
  • Attendance at a contributory school where applicable (refer to page 15 of the Information for Parents booklet )
  • Distance - using a straight line measurement

 

Admissions Criteria to Community schools for Primary Schools

Please refer to the Determined Admission Arrangements for 2014/2015   |(P.5)

  • Children in care or previously in care 
  • Exceptional medical/social reasons
  • Pupils with siblings in attendance at the school
  • Pupils living within the catchment area of the school
  • Where applicable - attendance at a Church of England church (refer to the Information for Parents booklet for further guidance)
  • Distance - using a straight line measurement

Allocation of Places

  • All preferences are assessed equally
  • If there are more applications than there are places then the oversubscription criteria is applied
  • Decisions are made for each of your preferences
  • If a place can be offered at more than one preference then the highest ranked school will be offered
  • The equal preference scheme means that you do not risk losing a lower ranked preference by not listing the school as your 1st preference
  • Include at least one preference you are likely to be offered 

Offer of a School Place

  • 03rd March 2014 - offer of a school place for secondary and high schools
  • 16th April 2014 - offer of a school place for primary,first and middle schools
  • If you are not happy with the decision you have the right to appeal against the decision. The School Choice Adviser may be able to provide you with further help regarding the appeals process
  • If you are refused a place at your preferred school your child's name will be automatically placed on the waiting list

Waiting Lists

  • Names are placed on the waiting list in accordance with the admissions criteria
  • A child's position on the waiting list is not fixed
  • If you have lodged an appeal your name will still be placed on the waiting list for community schools
