                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      What is an Academy?

An academy is a publicly funded school which operates outside of local authority control. Academies have more freedom than other state schools over the delivery of the curriculum, finances and teachers' pay and conditions.

Academies receive their funding directly from central government rather than through the local authority like other state schools. In addition academies receive funds that would have previously been held back by local authorities for the provision of their services within schools.
