Eric Thomasson, driver for First Group Travel, with students from Blackfriars and Coppice Schools
Monday 18th May 2009 saw the launch of TITAN independent travel training at both Blackfriars and Coppice Schools in Newcastle.
First Group Travel kindly arranged for a bus to pick up students from both schools and take them for a journey using public transport. Because of First and the work of the school staff following TITAN, many students had their first experience of using public transport (wheelchair accessible too!) and they really enjoyed it.
The Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor John Cooper also attended and travelled on the bus with some of the students.
During the week students also planned a trip to Hanley using public transport. They needed to find out the times of the two buses they had to catch from school to Newcastle bus station, and from the station to Hanley, a journey of about 6 miles.
The students' travel experiences will support parents and families in using public transport in the future, and helps equip students to travel independently within their communities. A pupil said 'it's great because I now know how to get around on a bus'.
