Travel Training
TITAN is Travel Independence Training Across the Nation. It is a scheme designed, and successfully used for over 20 years by Norfolk County Council||| schools and colleges. Staffordshire County Council has introduced this scheme to Staffordshire schools and colleges, initially for students with learning difficulties and disabilities. At present TITAN is being used at Tamworth, Cannock and Rodbaston campuses of South Staffs College, Coppice School, Blackfriars School and Post 16 site, Queen's Croft School, Hednesford Valley High School, Newcastle College, Two Rivers High School, The Fountains High School and The Meadows High School.
TITAN aims to help young people by giving them the skills and knowledge they need to become safe independent travelers.
The system works like traffic lights - students start with an introductory level and work through red, amber and green levels slowly building their skills and confidence. Students will be assessed at the end of each level and awarded a certificate if they pass. A student will not move on to the next level unless everyone involved is completely happy they are ready to do so. For more details on the training levels, and possible sources of useful information to help parents continue work outside the school or college environment, please see the TITAN materials page|||.
Students gradually build their skills - for example showing that they know their way around their own school or college, then the local area to the school or college before moving further away. They will learn to be aware of hazards around them, how to cross the road safely, and what to do if they have a problem. Students will have to show that they can give their name, their telephone number and the address of their school, or college and can contact their home, school or college using a mobile or public telephone. All tasks within TITAN will be adapted to be done way that suits the students abilities and needs. Once they are confident as pedestrians, they will move on to build other skills such as handling money, reading timetables, journey planning and using public transport.
TITAN teaching staff and students will also work with local bus companies (Arriva, Central Connect, First Potteries), the local police and Road Safety Officers|||. An identity card will be given to students to show that they are travel training, which they can use to ask for help if needed.
The training each student receives will always take into account their own individual needs and abilities.
There is no time limit to complete each level. Students will work through at their own pace, will be continually monitored with their achievements recorded, and will only ever move on to the next level when they are completely ready.
To give students confidence and self
esteem
To improve access to employment
To give students freedom to travel independently
