Staffordshire's Yellow School Buses

Staffordshire County Council service transports around 14,000 pupils and students who are entitled to transport assistance safely to school| and college each day on county contracted vehicles and local service buses.

Getting to School

Every parent/carer has a responsibility to ensure their child's regular attendance at school and this may involve accompanying your child all or part of the way to school. Staffordshire Road Safety| can help parents with their journey to and from school in a number of ways.

Moving from primary to secondary school can be a major step for your child undertaking a journey which may be longer or more difficult, or involve a change to their mode of transport, for example using a public bus. 'Stepping up to High School'| offers advice and information for parents to help their child decide on the most appropriate way to travel to and from their high school, along with useful information on walking, cycling, public transport and car travel.

A school travel plan| is a document owned by the school which outlines a number of practical initiatives aiming to reduce unnecessary car trips to and from the school building. By developing a school travel plan, the school demonstrates a commitment to promoting a safer and more attractive school environment.

The School Crossing Patrol Service| assists children on their daily journey to and from school. Each school day, more than 350 Crossing Patrols are on duty across Staffordshire. We cannot of course provide a patrol on every road crossed by every pupil and parents always retain responsibility for the safety of their children on the way to and from school.

Walking and Cycling

Staffordshire County Council would prefer children to be able to walk to and from school wherever possible, to encourage sustainable travel and promote health and exercise and we offer a number of initiatives that may help.

Staffordshire operate 'Walking Buses'|  which may be able to help if parents are unable to accompany pupils on the journey to school. In a Walking Bus children are collected along an agreed route by trained volunteers who act as 'Driver' and 'Conductor' - there are now over 100 throughout Staffordshire.

All Staffordshire's school children can attend a cycling training course| - various courses are offered to meet different age ranges.

For reasons that vary across the county it is not always possible for children to walk, and the journey to school should merit some careful consideration for both parent and pupil when choosing a school if the child is not entitled to free transport. The Council would prefer pupils to use existing public transport services instead of travelling by car. This will help to reduce peak hour congestion and limit environmental effects. For more information on public transport please call Traveline on 0871 200 2233. For assistance with journey planning including both bus and rail information the website www.transportdirect.info| may be of assistance.
