BSF in Tamworth

Outline planning applications

Outline planning applications were submitted in November 2009 and were approved in February 2010 for Belgrave High School, Rawlett Community Sports College, Queen Elizabeth's Mercian School and Wilnecote High School in Tamworth.

Outline planning status means that in principle it is possible to build a development of an approximate size and scale on a particular piece of land and the applications will not include final designs which will come later.

About Landau Forte Academy, Tamworth

Academies are all-ability, state-funded schools established and managed by sponsors, in Tamworth the sponsor is the Landau Forte Charitable Trust.

The Landau Forte Academy, Tamworth will replace Woodhouse Business and Enterprise College from September 2010 in the existing Woodhouse buildings. From September 2011 the Academy will move to brand new buildings with 11-16 provision located on the Woodhouse site and town wide post 16 provision located on part of the Queen Elizabeth's Mercian School site. Full planning applications for both Academy buildings are being submitted in January 2010.

"This is an exciting time for secondary education as a whole in Tamworth. The Academy is part of our wider vision for the area to increase the diversity of secondary schools across the town.

"The new Academy buildings will be flexible, sustainable and inspirational environments that will actively promote learning and provide a catalyst for raising standards and aspirations. The educational needs of the students will remain our top priority throughout the design and construction phase.

"It is a real success that we are able to move forward with the Academy which will bring significant investment in such difficult economic times. We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Landau Forte Charitable Trust to develop this new school." - Deputy County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Ian Parry

What has happened with BSF so far in Tamworth?

We chose Tamworth as the first area to receive BSF funding based on relatively low levels of educational attainment, levels of deprivation and because it is the area of the county most in need of the investment.

The bid we submitted in April 2008 to join the BSF programme included our draft proposal for changes to secondary education in Tamworth.Pdf Introduction to Tamworth (PDF, 6Mb).

Following government approval to enter the programme in June 2008 we discussed our draft  proposal with a wide range of stakeholders in Tamworth including primary, secondary and special school headteachers, county councillors, Tamworth's MP, district councillors, Tamworth and Lichfield College and the Health Authority. We then consulted with the public in Tamworth between 10 November 2008 and 15 January 2009. Read more about this consultation.

The consultation results went to Cabinet on 28 January 2009 where the decision was made to approve the following:

1. To change the age range of the following schools from the current age range of 11-18 to 11-16, with a planned admission number of 192, with effect from 01 September 2011:

• Queen Elizabeth's Mercian School
• Belgrave High School
• Rawlett Community Sports College
• Wilnecote High School

2. To establish an 11-18 Academy to replace Woodhouse Business and Enterprise College on the Woodhouse site (age range of 11-16) and also to provide the post 16 facility on the Queen Elizabeth's Mercian School site.

Following Cabinet approval, statutory notices for the school changes were published on 19 February. After a six week representation period the final recommendation will be put to Cabinet on 08 April 2009. Read the statutory notices.
