Becoming a Day Care provider

Ofsted define Day Care as care provided at any time (day or night) for children under 8 years on premises other than domestic premises for a total of 2 hours or more a day.

All childcarers - such as childminders, day nurseries, pre-schools and private nursery schools - providing for children from birth to the 31 August following their fifth birthday (known as the early years age group) must register with Ofsted on the Early Years Register and deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage.  Those caring for children from 5 to 8 years old can apply to be on the Childcare Register.

Types of Day Care:

Full Day Care - for children under 8yrs for a continuous period of four hours or more

Sessional Day Care - for children under 8 years, for sessions that are less than a continuous period of 4 hours in a day

Crèches - provide occasional care for children under 8 years. They need to register where they run for more than 2 hours a day

Out of school care - operates before or after school or during school holidays offering care for more than 2 hours a day

What you need to know

Throughout the whole registration process, support and advice is available from the Early Years Quality Support Officers (Childcare) in your district.  Ofsted provide guidance on the standards expected from childcare providers and the different types of register.

Have you notified the ICO?

All childcare providers, including childminders should be aware that they are required to notify the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) if they are processing any personal information or data via computer. 

By "processing", any use of a computer is included, including typing up records on a word processor, developmental observation records and the usage of CCTV in childcare settings.
