Safeguarding Children
(Previously known as child Protection)
Following the emergence of Every Child Matters and the Children Act 2004, the emphasis on protecting children has moved. It is now more appropriate to refer to this area of children's care as Safeguarding Children. What this means is that the concept of support extends beyond the idea of focusing solely on abuse. In effect, it requires some measures to become preventive rather that reactive.
Staffordshire Safeguarding Children Board is Staffordshire's own branding of the Local Safeguarding Board. The revised Inter-Agency Safeguarding Procedures 2007 are available to download from www.staffsscb.org.uk
Promoting Safe and Effective Care
This requires that staff in settings engage with parents and pass on, perhaps in informal ways, their vast knowledge and experience of working with all types of children's needs and behaviour.
Designated Person
This requires that the person charged with keeping 'safeguarding information' up to date, is staying in touch with developments and training requirements.
Working in Partnership
The need to form meaningful professional relationships with all other agencies involved in the delivery of children's services and of course working with parents.
Recruitment and Selection
The crucial emphasis on recruiting safe people to childcare posts and ensuring their continued suitability and ability to engage in the development of children.
Staying Healthy
Supporting and encouraging parents to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle both with and for their children.
Managing Behaviour
The need for childcare settings to recognise and respond to children whose behaviour is giving rise to concern, and to engage the appropriate professional agencies when required.
Recognising and reporting issues
Settings will need to know how to report issues of concern, using either the safeguarding procedures and/or Common Assessment Framework.
Full details will be available when you attend the Safeguarding Children training course(s). For further information please visit www.staffsscb.org.uk or contact your Workforce Development Officer.
