Family Learning

Family learning at Draycott

What Is Family Learning?

Family programmes aim to encourage family members to learn together.  They are learning as or within a family.  They include opportunities for intergenerational learning and, wherever possible, lead both adults and children to pursue further learning.  'The Family' is purposely not defined to enable adults and children with a range of relationships to participate together.  Usually the 'family' includes at least one adult member (i.e. 19 or over) and at least one child member (i.e. under 16).

Family learning provision is a planned programme of activities designed to engage adult and child learners together over a period of time.

Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy (FLLN)

FLLN has been a national initiative since 1994, designed to help parents and their children to improve their literacy, language and numeracy skills separately and together.  The programmes are funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and meet national guidelines.

Wider Family Learning

Wider Family Learning offers families the opportunity to learn together. Funded through the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), an exciting, innovative range of programmes such as arts and crafts, science, drama, ICT, sport and health, basic cookery and foreign languages is available.

Those who have not taken up learning opportunities for some time will also find this a good opportunity to re-engage with learning and have fun with their children!

Staffordshire County Council also invests in family learning through funding home/school partnership activities.  These activities complement and can feed into wider family learning and Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy (FLLN) provision.

Who provides Family Learning?

The Adult and Community Learning Service (ACL) provides family learning opportunities in partnership with a number of organisations throughout the county, and in a wide range of venues. These include libraries, children's centres, schools, community venues, colleges and residential outdoor education centres.
