Special Educational Needs

Staffordshire Children and Lifelong Learning Directorate's policy is to educate pupils with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream schools wherever possible and for the majority of such pupils their needs will be met from the resources normally available within the school without recourse to a statutory assessment under the 1996 Education Act.

For those pupils with statements of SEN, discussions about secondary transfer will have already taken place during the Year 5 and Year 6 Annual Review.

Most pupils with SEN of such a level as to require a statement will have already been identified and assessed well before the secondary transfer stage. However, if a parent is concerned about their child's SEN they should discuss their concerns with the staff at the child's current school.

If parents wish to appeal against the school named in their child's statement, the appeal would need to be submitted to the Special Needs and Disability Tribunal.
