Admission to Middle/Secondary Schools

Please refer to the Secondary Information for Parents 2009 booklet which provides further information and advice on the admissions process.  To see a copy of the booklet click the following link Information Booklet.

The majority of pupils transfer from the primary stage of their education to the secondary stage at the age of eleven. However, if you live in Biddulph, Leek, Codsall, Penkridge, Stone or Uttoxeter, your child will normally transfer to a middle school at the age of nine, before moving to high school once they are thirteen.

Making an Application for Secondary School

Between 15 September 2008 and 7 November 2008 it is possible for parents to use the online applications service to make an application for a Secondary School in September 2009.

Alternatively you can make a telephone application by contacting the admissions team on 01785 278593.

Please be aware that if you are making a preference for a selective school in a neighbouring authority you will need to complete a registration form which will need to be completed and returned much earlier than the application form.  Please contact the relevant authority for further information:

King Edward Foundation  - 0121 472 1147
Birmingham - 0121 675 0555
Walsall - 01922 686355/686357
St Joseph's College - 01782 848008

Coordinated Admissions Process

Whilst governing bodies of Voluntary Aided and Foundation schools are the admission authority for their school and apply their own admission criteria,  Staffordshire operates a co-ordinated admissions process with all schools within Staffordshire and also our neighbouring local authorities. This coordination results in all parents receiving only one offer of a Secondary School on the national offer date of 2 March 2009.

Please click on the following link Admission Criteria for details of the admissions criteria used for allocating places at Community Controlled, Church of England Aided, Catholic Aided and Foundation schools within Staffordshire.

If you are interested in applying for a school place at one of our neighbouring local authority schools, you will need to contact the local authority in order to receive information about their admissions critieria.

Please note that if you reside in Staffordshire, you must make your applications for all of your preferred Secondary schools through Staffordshire County Council.

Published Admissions Number

Each school has a Published Admissions Number (PAN) which indicates the number of pupils that may be admitted to a school in each year group. This number may only be exceeded in exceptional circumstances.

To contact the School Admissions and Transport Service for further information please e-mail
