Genealogy and Family History

Starting to trace your family tree can be the beginning of a new and intriguing adventure and there is a wealth of information both online and in written form. We hope that these pages will help you to begin your search for the history of people in Staffordshire.

To begin with, gather all of the information that you can find from your relatives. Ask about family members that they remember; search the family bible and look at photographs, wills and other family memorabilia.

Getting Started

Always start with the latest details that you are sure of and work back generation by generation. If for example you wish to trace your parents birth but do not know when they were born, purchasing their marriage certificate (using the eldest child's birth as a guide) would give you the parent's age and the respective names of the father of each parent. This would then provide a starting point for the parent's birth. A certificate of that birth will give the names of parents and include the mother's maiden surname. The process can then be repeated for each generation.

Additionally, there are many books and publications that can be purchased or borrowed from your local library as well as several monthly magazines relating to family history and genealogy that can be purchased.
