Registering a death
The people who can register a death will depend upon whether the death occurred in a house or hospital, or in some other location.
Deaths that occurred in a house or hospital
If the death occurred in either a house or hospital then any of the following people can register the death:
- A relative of the deceased person
- Someone who was present at the time of the death
- The occupier of the house or hospital (if they knew of the death)
- Another person living at the house (if they knew of the death)
- The person making the arrangements with the funeral director
Deaths that occurred elsewhere
If the death occurred in some other location other than in a house or in a hospital, then the following people can register the death:
- A relative of the deceased person
- Someone who found the body
- Someone who was present at the time of the death
- A person who is in charge of the body
- The person making the arrangements with the funeral director
An executor is not qualified to register a death on behalf of a client and neither can a funeral director register a death on someone else's behalf.
The majority of deaths are registered by a relative of the deceased person.
