Who else do I notify?

When someone dies, you may have to contact a wide variety or organisations to inform them about the death.

Below are details of some of the organisations that you may need to contact. It is worth remembering that for official purposes, some of the organisations listed may require a copy of the death certificate in order to amend their records. This is not a photocopy but an original copy issued by the Registrar.  The individual organisations themselves will let you know if this is the case. Details about how to obtain further copies of a death certificate can be found by viewing the copy certificates page on this website.

Financial institutions

Local and central government agencies

Medical and healthcare institutions

  • Dentist
  • Doctor
  • Hospital clinics
  • Private healthcare providers

Insurance companies

  • Household insurance provider
  • Life assurance provider
  • Motoring breakdown cover provider
  • Motor insurance provider *

Other organisations

  • District Council for Council Tax and Housing Benefit purposes
  • Employer
  • Solicitor
  • Utility companies (gas, electricity, water and telephone)

* It is important to note that if the deceased owned a vehicle then it is possible that there is no longer insurance cover allowing it to be driven. Many policies state that a vehicle may be driven by someone else with the owner's permission. However, as soon as the owner dies any such permission usually ceases. It is advisable to contact the insurance company before anyone else drives the vehicle to make sure that they are adequately covered.
