The Citizenship Test
The introduction of the citizenship test
Becoming a British citizen is an important event in your life. If you are applying for naturalisation as a British citizen you will need to demonstrate that you know about life in Britain. You can do this in one of two ways, firstly by taking the Life in the UK Test or secondly, by taking combined English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and citizenship classes.
Who takes the test?
Anyone applying for naturalisation as a British Citizen with a level of English at ESOL level 3 or above is eligible to take the test. If your level of English is lower than ESOL Entry 3 and you wish to apply for naturalisation you will need to attend combined English language (ESOL) and citizenship classes instead. Classes are run at your local further education or community college.
About ESOL and citizenship classes
ESOL and citizenship classes help you to improve your English and to learn more about life in Britain. These classes can be taken at your local further education or community college.
Finding out about your level of English
If you are not sure what your level of English is then your local further education or community college will be able to give you an initial assessment. Alternatively, you can contact your local learndirect centre.
