The Staffordshire Hoard

The largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found

In July of 2009, a metal detectorist in South Staffordshire found over 1,500 pieces of Anglo-Saxon  gold - the largest hoard ever found.

Although research will be ongoing for years to come, leading historians believe that the Staffordshire Hoard is war booty - torn from the battle field after a brutal confrontation.

The combined efforts of the Staffordshire Hoard Partnership ensured that Scabbardthe £3.3m needed to buy the Staffordshire Hoard, and keep it in the region, was raised.

The Staffordshire Hoard is now owned by the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, with both museums displaying pieces of the Hoard.

But fundraising continues.  A further £1.7m is now needed to research, clean and conserve the Hoard, and to unlock its secrets   - which will shed light on a time in our history we know very little about - the Dark Ages.

The Mercian Trail, a journey of discovery across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent which will bring our Anglo-Saxon past to life, is currently being developed.
