Of the 6 Projects awarded funding in Burton 3 have involved the major building and/or refurbishment of premises that have enhanced the environmental surroundings of their location and provided training and support which otherwise would not have been available within the local community.  A summary of a number of Projects is provided below:

Project Name: Burton Caribbean Association Regeneration Project
Project Sponsor: Burton Caribbean Association
Funding Awarded: £320,990
Project Duration: August 2006 - December 2008

Newly Refurbished Frontage - Burton Caribbean Community CentreThis Project received both capital and revenue funding.  Capital was used to refurbish and modify a run-down community centre, located in the heart of Burton, transforming it into a modern, state-of-the-art neighbourhood resource centre, accessible by the whole community, in particular ethnic individuals and groups.

The Project has helped to break down the barriers of access to services by respecting the cultural differences in service delivery needs and enabling "hard to reach" clients, often with multiple disadvantages, to have access to a variety of service provision and activities within their own neighbourhood.

Modifications to the building - totalling some 358 metres square - have included:

  • Installing a lift to ensure that the centre is compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act
  • Construction of a new staircase
  • Formation of a new frontage to the building with design input from local community members
  • Building a new ground floor office to house Project staff
  • Construction of a boiler house to the rear of the property
  • Completion of mechanical and electrical works making the building more economical to run, thus saving energy and the environment
  • Demolition of a dividing wall between two upstairs rooms to provide a large training/seminar room
  • New state-of-the-art equipment and furniture to enable the centre to host professional conferences/seminars in order to generate income that will help to sustain the Centre
  • Upgrading of IT equipment to enable the centre to deliver high quality inclusive training programmes
  • Installation of CCTV systems, alarms and fire safety equipment
  • Additional disabled toilets and the upgrading of existing ones to conform to new standards

Revenue funding has enabled the Project to provide access to further education, training, employment, information and advice, welfare services and enterprise initiatives, creating a cohesive environment for Priority 3 residents to integrate, learn and improve their quality of life.

The Centre works with a wide group of agencies and regeneration service providers to deliver additional services such as job searches, self-employment assistance and also seeks to assist voluntary/community groups to explore and develop community enterprise-type activities, thus providing increased learning and employment opportunities.

Achievements:

4 new jobs created on the Project
1 job safeguarded
£31,000 generated income
81 people attracted to the Centre as volunteers and/or trainee participants
11 of which have subsequently gone into employment as a result of their activities at the Centre
