Shop around before you have work done

This information will help if you have ever

  • Paid too much to have your roof re-tiled
  • Had your car serviced, only for it to break down two weeks later

Who should I use?

  • Always try and pick a qualified, reputable trader to do jobs for you. For some work eg gas repairs and installation, it is illegal for unqualified people to do the work.
  • Ask friends and family if they can recommend anyone. Check if traders are members of a recognised association.
  • Ask the association for a copy of their "Code of Practice". (This is a list of guidelines that members are supposed to follow.) Check whether the association has an arbitration scheme.
  • Ask the trader for a list of satisfied customers and ask to see the work.

How much will it cost?

Always try to agree a price, in writing, in advance. If you have work done by a trader who can't give you a fixed price, then tell him the maximum you are prepared to pay. Get this in writing.

Am I getting a good deal?

Try and get written quotes from a few traders, and then compare prices and standards of service. Get a completion date in writing before work is started.

What work will be done?

Always agree exactly what you want done in advance. Sometimes the trader is not sure what will need doing until he has started work. For example, it may be necessary to strip an engine to see what parts are required. When this happens either agree a maximum cost in advance or ask the trader to contact you when he has an accurate assessment of the work required.

Leave a telephone number with the trader where you can be contacted in case any problems arise.

Never

Agree to work being done on the spur of the moment, eg by someone who calls offering to tarmac your drive, cut your trees, or repair your roof.

Always remember

  • The law doesn't protect you from your mistakes.
  • A trader doesn't have to do a job for you.
  • You don't have an automatic right to credit.
  • You don't have the same protection if a "friend" does the job as a favour for you.
  • It is best to agree all details in writing. For building work a standard contract is available free from Staffordshire Trading Standards at the address below.
