Consumer advice and information is now provided by Consumer Direct.  Consumer Direct is a telephone and online consumer advice service, which is supported by local authorities and by Government.

A Staffordshire County Council Service, Health and Consumer Services is the generic name for three unique services.

Consumer Watchdog Alerts

Our Community Watchdog Scheme is a countywide network of volunteers. Staffordshire Community Watchdogs logoThey act as the eyes and ears for their community and assist Trading Standards in tackling rogue traders in Staffordshire. Watchdogs come from a variety of backgrounds. They include representatives from ethnic minorities, older people, mental health support groups, physically disabled, young people and residents associations. 
 
Trading Standards

Photo of man checking measures in a pubOur Trading Standards service operates from two offices (Burton and Stafford) and is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe and fair trading environment for the benefit of the consumers and businesses of Staffordshire.

We achieve this through a balance of advice to businesses and consumers and firm enforcement where appropriate through investigation of alleged criminal offences.

A wide-ranging service covering over 50 Acts of Parliament and 1,000 UK and European Regulations which are designed to promote and maintain a fair and safe trading environment. We handle around 18,000 consumer complaints and enquiries each year. If you are a Staffordshire consumer and have a specific query, please contact us.
 
Scientific Services

Photograph of laboratoryOur Scientific Services laboratories are based in Martin Street, Stafford. The service incorporates the statutory roles of the Public and Agricultural Analyst function for the County Council, local organisations, central government and industry. It offers technical and scientific advice and assistance to all departments of Staffordshire County Council and technical advice and support to the Fire and Rescue Service.

The service aims to provide a competitively priced range of services to customers designed to promote the social, economic and environmental well being of a modern, fast-changing society.
 
Registration of Births, Deaths & Marriages

Photo of brideOur Registration Service deals with the statutory registrations of births, deaths and marriages through its network of offices across Staffordshire. Consequently, this high profile service has substantial contact with the general public, usually at times of great joy or sadness.

The Service aims to provide a prompt, accessible and caring service for the registration of births, deaths and marriages. Able to license suitable premises, other than Register Offices and religious buildings, as venues for the regular solemnisation of civil marriage ceremonies it also performs civil ceremonies for wedding couples.
