Ideas and Initiatives

START

START - Staffordshire Together Against Rogue Traders - is a pioneering project aimed at tackling doorstep crime and protecting vulnerable adults.  The project is being launched on a trial basis in Rugeley and, if successful, will be rolled-out across the county. The project will support vulnerable people who because of their age, isolation, disabilities, or financial position might be unable to protect themselves against exploitation by people calling at the door. It will do this by

  • Raising awareness of issues that affect vulnerable people and encouraging reporting of incidents
  • Improving the ways that agencies work together.
  • Providing a rapid response to all incidents
  • Supporting people by building their confidence and providing door chains and other items which make them safer.

The remit of the Consumer Services Community Safety Officers is to reduce anti-social behaviour resulting from the underage sale of age restricted products such as alcohol and solvents. The officers use a combination of enforcement practices, educational programmes with young people and the community and retailer training. Whilst working in partnership with other agencies, the remit of the CSCS team is distinct and provides a valuable resource for local communities, young people and education providers and retailers faced with legislative requirements.

For further information, please contact the Community Safety Team at Staffordshire Trading Standards on 01785 277888.

Community Watchdog Scheme

Staffordshire Consumer Services Community Watchdog scheme is a countywide network of volunteers that act as the eyes and ears for their community and assist Trading Standards in tackling rogue traders in Staffordshire. There are currently over 400 volunteers countywide.
