Trading Standards warns public about high-pressure security sales

Staffordshire residents are being warned to be on their guard for salespeople operating locally selling home security equipment.

The warning follows a recent spate of incidents where people living in Lichfield have been targeted.

The sales technique involves ringing round potential customers to arrange appointments, then visiting people in their homes and using persuasive conversation to convince them that to feel more safe, they need additional home security.

Although the security system is in itself reasonably priced, the customer is also sold ongoing maintenance and offered subsequent upgrades which can prove to be very expensive.

County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture said: "I would urge Staffordshire residents to be wary of salespeople approaching them by phone or in person, using pressurised techniques to sell security systems, or indeed any other equipment or service.

"Once again, vulnerable people are being targeted and we want to remind consumers not to feel forced into making a purchase. When buying any goods or services we would always suggest shopping around and getting several quotes. If you do sign a contract at home you will normally have a cooling-off period of seven days in which you can cancel the contract."
