What is an RSS feed?

RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) allows websites to announce new content as it is published. By subscribing to an RSS feed you can catch up with regularly updated web pages automatically.

Instead of having to visit a site daily to see what's changed, your web browser can be notified when new pages are published and can display them as a list.

How does it work?

The RSS feed is a list of all the most recent pages, in a computer-readable format. The website will update the list with new pages as they appear, and your RSS reader will pick up on this and offer the new page to you, usually as part of a list.

How to use RSS

The easiest way to use RSS is through your web browser. Not all browsers support feeds, so you may need to upgrade or switch browsers.

Listed here are some of the more popular browsers that support RSS feeds.

Browser Platform Download website
Mozilla Firefox Windows and Mac www.getfirefox.com
Internet Explorer 7 Windows www.microsoft.com/ie
Safari Mac Included with Mac OS X

You can also use dedicated software called a feed aggregator and subscribe to all your favourite websites in one place. Some websites offer online feed collection, such as Google Reader at http://www.google.com/reader
