A34 Stone Road

UPDATE 20/02/24

Abnormal Loads

  • To be advised.

Pets At Home Pedestrian & Cyclist Access

Due to the ongoing works, there is no provision for pedestrians or cyclists to access to the new Pets At Home distribution centre via the new access on the A34.  An alternative route is in operation from the A34 to the south via William Bagnall Drive/Harry Kerr Drive.

Works overview

These highway works are associated with the Pets At Home development off the A34 Stone Road, Stafford.  The works are a requirement of the planning consent given by Stafford Borough Council and the works are being funded by the developer, Stoford Developments Ltd.

The work includes the construction of a new 3 arm roundabout on the A34 Stone Road, approximately 1.1km north of the junction with A513 Beaconside (Redhill roundabout) in order to provide access to a new Pets At Home distribution centre, where it is anticipated up to 800 jobs will be created.

A significant amount of earthworks are required to form the new embankments to support the new 70m diameter roundabout, which also involve raising the level of the existing carriageway by up to 2m.  Between the roundabout and William Bagnall Drive, the existing footway on the East of the A34 will be upgraded to a shared surface for pedestrians and cyclists, in addition to the construction of a new footway on the West side of the A34.

A signalised pedestrian crossing will be installed on the A34 just to the south of the new roundabout, and modifications will also be carried out to the existing traffic signals on William Bagnall Drive in order to provide a signalised crossing point.  New bus stops will be provided on the A34 in both directions, including the provision of bus shelters.  New drainage and street lighting will also be installed as part of the scheme.

The works involve the diversion of numerous utilities, in addition to new services being installed to the development site.  Further details of the proposed works can be seen on the scheme layout plan.

When are the works taking place?

The works commenced on Monday 14 February 2022.

The works will generally be carried out during the day between Monday to Friday although occasionally works may be also carried out on Saturday.

There will be instances when works are required to be carried out overnight such as to install the traffic management, however these are expected to be infrequent.

When will the works be completed?

Works are due to complete by March 2024.

Will I be able to access my home/business?

Yes, access to all properties/businesses will be maintained, however you might need to use an alternative route and these will be signed.

What effect could the works have on me?

Carrying out the works will be a large and complex job and unfortunately a scheme of this nature cannot be carried out without causing some disruption.  In order to keep traffic flowing and allow the works to be carried out safely, there will be extensive traffic management in place throughout the construction phase.

The key milestones and dates are summarised below:

Final Phase

  • Commencing 29 August to March 2024.
  • Lane 1 closures in both directions to enable remaining works to be constructed.

In addition to the above, the following restrictions will also remain in place throughout the remainder of the works:

  • A temporary speed limit of 30mph.
  • Bus stops within the works area will be affected, and alternative stops may be in operation.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained along the eastern side of the A34 at all times – this will include a temporary footway diversion on the A34 southbound carriageway.

A34 Closures

The next overnight road closures are taking place as detailed at the top of this page.

Please see information at the top of the page relating to closures of the A34 for abnormal load movements.
