Staffordshire County Council staff, trade union members, delegates and dignitaries attended the unveiling of a Workers’ Memorial Bench at a special ceremony in Newcastle-under-Lyme recently.
The ceremony at the new Apedale Energy Station at Apedale Community Country Park took place as part of International Workers’ Memorial Day, a worldwide commemorative event held every year in honour of all those workers who have been injured, suffered ill-health or lost their lives during the course of their work.
International Workers' Memorial Day also forms part of a wider campaign to strengthen health and safety legislation and to protect people from the risk of injury in the workplace.
Chairman of Staffordshire County Council Erica Bayliss said:
"Staffordshire County Council is fully committed to ensuring the health and safety of our staff and wider communities but we should pause to remember those who have suffered injury, illness or death in the workplace.
"The Workers’ Memorial Bench unveiled in Newcastle-under-Lyme serves as a poignant reminder of those harmed at work and strengthens our resolve to ensure a safe working environment for everyone."
In addition to the unveiling of the Workers’ Memorial Bench a minute’s silence was also held at the ceremony in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
