Staffordshire and the shadow of Sherlock Holmes

Posted on Monday 16th January 2012

Codsall library will be hosting a talk by the author of ‘Outrage’, the story of Sir Arthur Conan’s Doyle’s most famous real life case.

Roger Oldfield will be talking about the sensational arrest of George Edalji of Great Wyrley in 1903, who was imprisoned for a brutal attack on a pit pony.

George appealed to the creator of the world’s favourite fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, to help him prove his innocence.

It seemed to a fascinated audience around the world that Sherlock Holmes himself had sprung to life, in a story as gripping as any of his famous adventures, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle went on the trail in Staffordshire looking for clues.

Was George guilty? Conan Doyle is famous for having been taken in by spiritualists and faked photographs of fairies. Was he taken in by George Edalji?

Roger Oldfield will be at Codsall Library to talk about this thrilling episode in Staffordshire’s history on Tuesday 24 January from 7pm to 8:30pm. Tickets cost £2 (£1 for library members and concessions.)
