Residents are being urged to give their views on plans to install safety boosting measures along two streets in Burton.
Staffordshire County Council will launch a consultation tomorrow (Jan 27) on proposals to put speed cushions along Regents Park Road and Jephson Road.
The plans follow concerns raised by residents who said that motorists were regularly breaking the 30mph limit.
A traffic survey supported this view and found that a large number of motorists were clocking up speeds of more than 40mph.
Local County Councillor Tim Corbett said: “Residents have told us they are concerned with the speeds that motorists have been reaching when travelling along these two streets. They want their community to be safe and for motorists to change their behaviour.
“National statistics show that if a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle travelling at 40mph, there is an 80 per cent chance they will die whereas this figure is dramatically reduced to 20 per cent if the car is travelling at 30mph.
“I would urge residents to make the most of this opportunity and put their views forward during the public consultation. It could have life saving consequences.”
The highways team sent an informal questionnaire to residents in November.
A total of 913 households were sent a consultation leaflet and 288 people replied.
Seventy-four per cent (212) of people who responded said they are in favour of some form of traffic calming measures being installed with 63 per cent (182) supporting the introduction of speed cushions.
The consultation, which has a reference of HOHM/TM/ TR 54/11, will run until February 19.
