A brand new, state of the art £2.5 million vocational centre is due to be officially opened in Burntwood.

The Lichfield and Burntwood Vocational Centre, situated on the site of Chase Terrace Technology College in Burntwood offers a range of facilities specially designed for vocational courses.

The centre offers courses in engineering, hair and beauty and construction including painting, decorating, electrical, plumbing, joinery and trowel trades.

The new centre has been funded by Staffordshire County Council, and is part of a partnership between five secondary schools in the area, two special schools, a short stay school and South Staffordshire College. The Centre’s primary aim will be to raise achievement and to increase participation beyond the age of 16.

Rachel Bailye, Centre Manager said: "I am delighted that the Centre is now officially open. The Partnership Board, architects, builders and centre staff have worked tirelessly to see this come to fruition and we now have a first class vocational facility for learners in the district."

The Centre will be opened at 5.30 pm on May 17 by County Councillor Mike Lawrence, Cabinet Member for Children’s Wellbeing. He said: "This new centre is fantastic. It will provide much-needed facilities for the development of vocational skills in the area, hopefully encouraging more young people to raise their achievement and continue learning after 16. The facilities at the centre are very impressive, from a fully equipped hair and beauty area to a large open space for building work, and I’m sure the centre will attract many more learners keen to hone their skills."

Members of the public are invited to drop in for a look around or a guided tour from 6.30-8.00 pm. There will be demonstrations in each area, including a catwalk show showcasing hair designs for a "red carpet" event
